2000/07/01　AIKOMでソウル大学が募集されていることを知る。

　掲示板にてソウル大学留学の案内を発見。ゼミの場でも，ご自身が韓国語に堪能な，ジェンダー論の某Ｓ先生が教えてくれる。期間が１年間で長いし，朝鮮語もそんなに得意でない（優・良・可でいうと良）し，不安も残るが，朝鮮語を選択した意地と，１年くらいゆっくりと海外体験があってもいいんじゃないかというふざけた（？）動機で応募を決める。
　募集人数が１名とのことだったので，「他にもっと朝鮮語がうまい人（実は結局一緒にソウル大学に行くことになった鈴木君のことなのだが）いるし，あまり専門と韓国と関係ないし，おそらく落ちるだろうなぁ」と思いながらも，後に行われる面接ではどんなことを訊かれるのかを想像しつつ，応募書類の準備をする。去年までは定員が２名だったような気もしたので，各方面に定員が増えないか交渉開始。よく考えると，定員が１名だったら落ちることを確信しての行動なだけに恥ずかしい。
　卒業が延びるということもあり（制度上は留年なしで卒業できるのだが）実は親も乗り気じゃなかったようである。

　2000/07/09　志望動機書に悩む。ちなみに22歳の誕生日。

　成績証明書なんかは教務課に頼んでおけばいいので問題なし。しかし，「志望動機」を800字程度で書かねばならぬ……。悩んだあげく，関心分野をなんとか韓国と結びつけることに成功……したかどうかはみなさんに判断をお任せする。志望動機書の全文は以下の通り。

　私が大韓民国のソウル大学に留学を希望する主な理由は，三つある。
　まず，一点目として，自分が関心を持っているイシューについて研究する際，大韓民国での経験・探究活動が有用であることを挙げたい。現在，私はサイバースペース，より具体的に言えば，その空間での情報のあり方や情報の持つ意味の変容，また，そこでの公共性やコミュニティの姿，ネットワークと人間とのインターフェイスなどをイシューとして設定している。また，これらのイシューの中で，いわゆる漢字コード問題やアルファベット言語の優越性なども論題として取り上げたいと思っている。これらのイシューに関して考える上で，同じ二バイト文字文化圏であり，経済規模を勘案すれば日本よりも急速に電子情報化が進んでいる大韓民国での経験・探究活動は，大いに有効である。
　理由の二点目は，外国語習得上のものである。大学入学時から，韓半島（朝鮮半島）・韓国語（朝鮮語）に興味を持って第二外国語として学習してきたが，コミュニュケーション・ツールの観点から見た場合，未だ十分とは言い難い。現在，折角学習している韓国語の能力を，コミュニケーションにおける実用に耐える位置にまで高めたいというのが第二の理由である。
　三点目は，韓国（朝鮮）文化および日韓文化交流に対する日本人としての興味関心である。ここ数年，韓半島（朝鮮半島）の文化が積極的に日本に紹介されるようになっているが，未だある程度のバイアスがかかって伝達されていることが多いように感じる。短期留学を契機に，実際に大韓民国で生活し，内部から韓半島の文化を感じ取り，また，大韓民国での日本文化の解釈・その背景についても捉えたいと思っている。

　すごく立派な学者みたいですなぁ（笑）。

　2000/07/12　やっぱし………。

　やはり，１名は別の人に決定したようである（掲示板で確認）。とはいいながらも，実は行けることになったわけで（そうでなければこの日記も書けないはずで），AIKOM委員会から次のような電子メールが。

　貴君のソウル大学留学に関してご相談したいことがあります。お手数ですが、明日（７月13日木曜日）14時以降にAIKOM委員会室までお越し下さい。もし明日は都合が悪いということでしたら明後日以降でもかまいませんが，なるだけ早いうちにお越し下さい。

　ひょっとしたらいい知らせかもと思い，期待に胸躍らせながら翌日の14時を待つ。

　2000/07/13　うれしい（？）知らせ。

　やはりいい知らせであった。奨学金（月８万）は正式決定の人にしか出ないけど，もしも奨学金なしでいいなら，キミもソウル大学に許可申請してあげるよ，とのこと。奨学金は毎年出ているわけではなく，最初からそんなものはアテにしていなかったので二つ返事でお願いした。

　2000/07/14　ソウル大学からの許可下りる。

　AIKOM委員会がソウル大学に問い合わせてくれたところ，受け入れてもいいとの返事がすぐにあったとのこと。木宮先生とソウル大学の寛大さに感涙を滲ませながら，ソウル大学への正式の申請書を書く。

　2000/09/29　書類提出。

　ソウル大学へ申請書類はすべてホームページ上からダウンロードせよとのこと。しかし，ダウンロードしてみるとWord形式。Macintoshを使っているので，僕はWordを持っていない（メモリをたくさん喰うため，マシンがフリーズしたりする）。そこで，AIKOM委員会に「くれ」と取りにいく。
　銀行の預金残高証明書とかを実家から郵送してもらったり，推薦状を生越先生と市野川先生に書いてもらったりと（どうもありがとうございました）迷惑をかけまくりながらも書類を揃える。
　しかし，またもや困ったのが「研究計画書（英文）」と「自己紹介文（英文）」である。もちろん朝鮮語で書いてもいいのだが，英語の方がまだマシ（決して得意ではない）なので，英語で書き，友人に添削してもらう。ここにきて朝鮮語のみならず，英語の能力もＺ会かなんかで鍛え直す必要があることを実感し，微妙に凹む。こんなんでバイトで英語を高校生に教えていていいのだろうかという疑問も頭をよぎる。
　結局思案の末，書き上げたものは以下の通り。まずは「研究計画書」。

I am interested in the effects of various media and information technology (IT), and among them I've especially focused on the advanced IT such as the Internet, mobile terminal and virtual reality. Innovation these days in the IT is drastic enough to change the many aspects of the society, as economy, politics, our way of lives, and even our perception. In this deep economic recession there is a tendency to see the IT only from the viewpoint of business and management but the media and the IT change the politics, economy, our lives, our ways to think, to feel, and to recognize our environment and almost everything. I am convinced that it is necessary to study and discuss such changes, and only through this activity we can construct the ideal society and relation between human beings and technology. More concretely speaking, I am most interested in these themes below.

[1] Is there possibility that people who connect to the Internet to form a community in cyber space and if the answer is yes, what is the difference between community in cyber space and in the real society ?
[2] How the meanings, texture, mass, and confidence of / to information changes when information is put into cyber space and other media (e.g. the problem of two-bites-charactors such as Kanji and Hangul, the effects of e-money) ?
[3] How different is our way to recognize and trust the information and someone connects to us by the kind of media ?
[4] What effect will be given to our society (e.g. money, human relationship, recognition, economy) and ourselves by the spread of the IT ?

I've already took basic economics, politics, sociology, engineering, law, life science, and psychology classes at the University of Tokyo. And in sociology and economics, I have specific knowledge to some extent through specialized lectures and laboratory, in which I present the theory about cyber space and the IT. Besides I positively attend the symposium and seminar (ex. Prof. Hiroshi Ishii for MIT Media Lab and etc.), read the related books and magazines (ex. quarterly magazine InterCommunication published by NTT Publishing, Cyber Space edited by Michael Benedict, Digital McLuhan written by Paul Levinson, and etc.).

In Seoul National University, I'm planning to take lectures about media theory and do field work about media circumstance in South Korea. Also I want to watch the real situation about information in South Korea lively and hear from many Korean citizens how they digest the rapid change of information circumstance, advanced information tools, and drastic change of their society. But I have only basic Korean language skill and don't have advanced skill enough to express complicated concept. So with studying in my major, I plan to blush my Korean language skill up by going your language school.

I am now very interested in the effects of various media and information technology (IT), and among them I've especially focused on the advanced IT such as the Internet, mobile terminal and virtual reality. Innovation these days in the IT is drastic enough to change almost all the aspect of the society including economy, politics, our way of lives, and even our perception. In Japan this change is called the IT Kakumei (the IT revolution), compared to the industrial revolution which happened in 18th century. This IT Kakumei is regarded as a very important key for Japanese economy to recover from its deep stagnating recession. It seems that the attitude toward this "revolution" is shared all over the world including South Korea. And people tend to see the IT only from the viewpoint of business and management, which sounds too optimistic ignoring human beings and the whole society. But the media and the IT change the politics, economy, our lives, our way to think, to feel, and to recognize our environment and almost everything. I am convinced that it is necessary to study and discuss these changes, and only through this activity we can construct the ideal society and relation between human beings and technology. In South Korea these days the IT-related business and industry is spreading faster than Japan and the information infrastructure such as the Internet is more widespread than in almost all Asian countries including Japan. I've already learned the basic economics, politics, sociology and engineering in The University of Tokyo and now I am reading books and attending the symposium about information, media, man-machine interface, and cyber space actively. So I have basic and a little specialized knowledge about them. Therefore it is very useful and precious for me to study in Seoul National University and to be surrounded with the atmosphere, daily life, and human behavior in South Korea, leading country in advanced media region.

I've learned Korean language since I entered the University, so I have basic Korean language skills but it isn't well enough to express complicated concept. So I'm studying Korean language in the University and at home with native speaking teachers of Korean language, printed material, and broadcasting.

　なんでわざわざ「Given」hairなんて書いたかというと，髪の毛を染めていたからなんですね（笑）。
　実は書類にメールアドレスを書いてから，契約していたプロバイダが倒産するなどといった，軽い（？）トラブルもあったものの何とか提出。

　2000/10/10　いきなりソウル大学からメールが。

Dear Sakazaki:
We have received your application pocket.
However, we still need two things:
1. your Sponsor's Certificate of Employment or Certificate of Business Registration.
2. your two recommendations from your teachers have to be sealed.
Thus, you should ask your teachers to write the recommendation again.
The recommendation letter has to be sealed.
All the materials has to be here by 20th at 6:00 p.m.

　どうも，AIKOM委員会の側が先生からの推薦状を厳封するのを忘れたらしい。AIKOMの担当者曰く「去年はよかったんだけどなぁ〜」。とても呑気である。日頃の几帳面な性格が幸いし，先生からの推薦状はコピーをとっておいてあったため，それを先生に渡して書いてもらった。もう１人のソウル大学留学者鈴木君はコピーをとってなかったので苦心したらしい。何でもコピーを取っておく，という変なクセもいざというとき役に立つことがあるようだ。
　また，父親の就業証明書は日本語しか出してもらえず，ソウル大学の提示する「すべての書類は英語か朝鮮語でなければならない」という条件にそぐわないため，そのままでは受理してもらえない（一節によれば，相手は日本語が読めはずだが，プライドで日本語書類を受理しないらしい）。かといって正式に翻訳してもらうと金がかかる。と言うわけで，僕が（！）父親の英語版就業証明書を作成し，それを父親の会社に送り，社印を捺印してもらうというウラワザを使ってなんとかクリアする。こんなことホームページで言っちゃっていいのかな？　問題があったら削除の方向で（苦笑）。

　2000/11/26　元朝鮮語クラスの友人と韓国映画・わが家で韓国料理パーティー。

　あまり留学とは関係ないけど，韓国関係ということで。パルテノン多摩で韓国映画「シュリ」「クワイエットファミリー（原題：チョヨンハン　カジョク）」「春香伝（チュニャンジョン）」の３本立て。根本理恵先生の偉大さを改めて知るとともに，シュリで涙してしまった自分の涙腺の弱さを再確認（もう年なのだろうか）。その後，鷺沼のわが家に移動して，チヂミ（韓国風お好み焼き）・チャプチェー（韓国春雨の炒め物）・キムチチゲ（鍋）を食べてもらう。美味しいとの講評をいただく。韓国で料理学校でも行きますか？　その時の写真は，元クラスメイトの平野さんのページから見ることができる。
